Two cheap smartphones from Vodacom you’ll really want

Last year 25.7% of all phones and tablets sold by Vodacom were the network operator’s own brand.

The release of two new smartphones, including a premium grade handset might push that number higher this year.

The first of the two handsets is the Smart Platinum 7.

The handset has been given a price tag of R7 999 and for its specs, Vodacom might as well be giving it away. The handset uses the Qualcomm Snapdragon 652 chipset which features support for LTE and the fastest 802.11ac Wifi standard.

The chipset us paired with an octa-core CPU in a big.LITTLE configuration of a quad-core 1.87GHz Cortex-A72 as well as a quad-core 1.4GHz Gortex-A53. An admirable 3GB of RAM and 32GB of internal storage round off the computing side of things.

At the rear you’ll find a 16MP camera with an f/2.0 aperture, phase detection and auto-focus. The 8MP shooter also houses an LED flash.

This little beast of a smartphone will set you back R3 199.

The chipset in this phone swaps Qualcomm out for a Mediatek MT6755M chipset. The CPU is once again an octa-core in a big.LITTLE configuration with a quad-core 1.8GHz Cortex A-53 and a quad-core 1.0GHz Cortex A-53.

Sadly there is only 16GB of internal storage but that can be expanded by up to 32GB using a microSD card.

While there is support for LTE, Wifi is limited to the 802.11 a/b/g/n standards.

VR you say?

For those that missed out on the Samsung Gear VR deal a few months back, Vodacom has just the thing for you. The Smart Platinum 7 will ship with the Vodafone Smart VR headset. The headset doesn’t look dissimilar to the Gear VR and hey, its free when you by the already cheap handset.

Both of these new smartphones come with a three-year warranty and will be available mid-July.
