Turtle Rock tries to shock Evolve back to life by making it FTP

Turtle Rock has announced that it will be making its asymmetrical shooter Evolve free to play on PC.

The game sees four players controlling a team of hunters take on a fifth player controlling a massive, powerful monster. Despite being highly anticipated ahead of its original launch back 2015, the game was slated by numerous critics for being overburdened with DLC and the absence of a single player mode.

“When Evolve launched, the reception wasn’t what we expected,” the developer said in a blog post addressed to the Evolve community. “Sure, there were some good reviews. There were also bad reviews. Yes, there was excitement. There was also disappointment – for players and for us.”

By making the game free to play, Turtle Rock hopes to breath life back into the game, which will likely be a hard ask.

Looking at the information collated at Steamdb reveals that over the last week not even 200 players felt Evolve was worth firing up, and these are people who spent money on the game.

It gets worse though. During a weekend in September where players could play Evolve for free, only 9 175 players felt the urge to give the game a tyre kicking. Since then, the game has failed to tempt more than 500 players at a time to fire the game up.

Founders evolution

Anybody who went out and bought the game before today will be christened a “Founder”. This means that these players can take any of the DLC they bought with them into the new free beta version of the game.

“As long as we work on Evolve, we will show our appreciation for our committed fans and early adopters with gifts, rewards, and special access,” the developer said.

The question now is whether making Evolve free to play will actually breath new life into the game or whether Steam users will download it, play it once and then never play the game again.

Right now, Evolve is still not on Steam (the game was pulled yesterday ahead of the free to play announcement) but we expect it to appear back on the store later today.

Will you be trying out Evolve now that it’s free to play or is your storage space too valuable to you? Let us know in the comments.
