Has Sombra just been announced as new Overwatch character?

Ever since its release, Overwatch has pulling in oodles of players becoming one of the most popular games of 2016.

Never a developer to rest on its laurels, Blizzard has decided it’s FPS/MOBA hybrid is due for another hero. At the moment there are 21 heroes to choose from, but Blizzard has always said that more heroes will be making their way into the game.

A number of rumours have been swirling since release about who the next characters could be, but Xbox’s Major Nelson might have dropped the biggest hint yet.

Posting a picture on to Twitter yesterday, it shows the schematics of a sniper rifle that heals allies and damages enemies when fired. It incorporates the same in-game technology in Mercy’s healing staff. The ‘Ziegler, A’ referred to below is Angela – Mercy’s real name.

The only character that fits the bill is Sombra, a support sniper that is known to those familiar with Overwatch lore. ‘Sombra’, incidentally, means ‘shadow’ in Spanish.

For a bit of background, she is the mother of another playable character, Pharah and has been seen in many photos depicting the original Overwatch members. In Blizzard’s own production images, there is a sniper with the name ‘Amari’ on her shoulder – and Pharah’s real name is Fareeha Amari.

She is even referenced inside the game (if you know where to look on the Dorado map), so it seems that she has always been part of the original launch plan.

We have to point out though that we have nothing more to go on except the schematic photo from Major Nelson, but if you’ve been following all the recent rumblings, it’s fairly easy to join the dots.

In any event, have a look at the video below, which explains a bit more about Sombra, her backstory and the evidence supporting her insertion into the game.
