First 1K Fakugesi attendees get a free musical maker board

Last week one of the coolest events of the year, the Fakugesi Digital Arts Festival, kicked off.

The festival, which takes place from August 19th to September 3rd, is full to the brim with events, showcases, workshops and more that focus not only on tech, but tech made right here in SA.

The festival passes themselves encapsulate this idea. Created by local maker Tom Van den Bon from BinarySpace , the festival pass is actually a printed circuit board (PCB) that can be used to create music.

Van den Bon explains how it came to be and what it can do:

The festival pass was designed around an idea to create a PCB badge for the event. Something that is fairly easy to assemble even without any electronic skills, but also something that would appeal to creative people. One of the requirements were through-hole components that could be easily soldered together. This is the badge that I designed for them. The design is basically a bare bone Arduino, but with added components to hack around with digital synthesized audio (I.E.. a synthesizer). Apart from the Arduino core, it has speaker and headphone outputs. For inputs we have a bunch of buttons that can be used easily for something simple like a piano input, or for more complex programs you can add 5 potentiometers to change possible parameters such as frequency and intensity. Basically the hardware is there to make some funky audio toys [and] tools.
These awesome boards will be given away (free!) to the first 1 000 people to attend the festival. All you need to do is choose one of the great events which make up the festival and attend one of them. If you’re one of the first thousand, you’ll be getting one of these as your festival pass.

We have events we really think you should attend. If making stuff is what you like to do, the market hack is where you want to be. There will not only be virtual reality (VR) demos and RC cars, but also a station to build upon the pass and use it to make music.

If hacking is what you really focus on, get thee to the #HackThe Constitution event where attendees will try to make the Constitution something everyone can understand.

If you love videogames, you’re covered too and you should be at A MAZE.  to see indie game creations from this country and abroad.

But that’s just a few of the events, there are many more on the Fakugesi Festival site. Choose an event to attend and we’ll see you there.
