#SABC has ’til midnight to defend against paying for Labour Court case

The SABC has until midnight tonight to explain to the Johannesburg Labour Court why it shouldn’t be liable for the legal costs incurred during the case involving four previously fired journalists.

Last week, the court ruled that the public broadcaster had dismissed Suna Venter, Foeta Krige, Krivani Pillay and Jacques Steenkamp unlawfully, ordering that they be reinstated immediately and that the SABC’s management should stump up the legal costs.

The court gave the SABC five working days to submit a responding affidavit, explaining why it should not be held liable.

Speaking to htxt.africa, Solidarity’s Communications Manager, Juran van den Heever, said the trade union is still waiting for the response and would release a statement on the matter tomorrow morning.

“If they don’t respond, then they will be in contempt of court because the part of the Labour Court judgement was an order to submit the response,” he said.

The responding affidavit will be authored and submitted by the SABC’S General Manager of Radio News and Current Affairs, Seboleto Ditlhakanane and Acting Group Executive of News and Current Affairs, Moloto Tebele.
