Here is why over 13 000 .org.za websites have been suspended

South Africa’s ZA Central Registry (ZACR) last week undertook the rather mammoth task to suspend 13 799 websites registered under the .org.za second-level domain.

The reason for this, the Registry explained, was to ensure the smooth running of the country’s domain name system.

As part of this, all org.za domains had to be manually transferred by their respective owners from a legacy system to ZACR-accredited Registrars – and those that didn’t faced the chop.

If you have been caught out of the loop with this one, ZACR did explain that the suspension wasn’t permanent and that owners have until 1st September next year to get their affairs in order. But if nothing is done by that cut-off date, the websites will be deleted.

“Any org.za names that have not been transferred to .ZA- accredited registrars by 1 September 2017 will no longer be reachable on the Internet. These domain names will then be deleted and made available for re-registration on a first-come, first-served basis,” explained ZACR CEO Lucky Masilela.

Technically if you have a website that makes use of the .org.za domain, you should have known about this change for a while.

“This has been communicated, inter alia, via the ZACR website’s Registrar Noticeboard as well as via email. Apart from email communications, lists of org.za domain names were made available to Registrars at their specific request and an independent consultant was also appointed to contact registrants with a view to managing this migration process,” ZACR said.

If you want to check if you will be affected, a complete list of domain names that remain on the org.za default registrar is available at the org.za default registrar and will be updated periodically.
