Rumour has it the Xiaomi Mi 5S will scan your fingerprint through glass

The follow up to Xiaomi’s impressive Mi 5, the Mi 5S  will reportedly use some interesting new tech from Qualcomm allowing it to scan a fingerprint through glass.

Before we take a look at the handset the real star of this story is Qualcomm Snapdragon Sense ID.

The tech was launched back in March 2015 and would allow manufacturers to grab 3D scans of a fingerprint rather than the 2D image many scanners use these days. Beyond that the scanner can read a print through materials such as glass, sapphire and even aluminium.

The benefit of this is the scans the phone is using are more detailed and as a result harder to spoof with something like a photocopy or dental paste. Ultimately this would make biometrics more secure, at least in the respect of mobile phone applications.

The rumour that Mi 5S might house this Qualcomm tech isn’t without merit. A picture of a slide which alleges that the handset will house Sense ID appeared on Weibo.

While this is all still mostly a rumour, Fone Arena has reported that an AnTuTu benchmark has revealed what specifications the Mi 5S may boast.

The handset uses the latest Qualcomm Snapdragon 821 chipset which was announced in July. The handset will reportedly have a native resolution of 1920 x 1080 which is driven by an Adreno 530 GPU.

Other specifications such as the battery capacity and camera sensors are still very much rumours at this point but the most likely specifications are a 3 490mAh battery and a 16MP rear camera with an f/1.9 aperture.

We quite enjoyed the Xiaomi Mi 5 and still think its among the best flagship smartphones released this year. Innovative technology like ultrasonic biometrics would make the phone that much more secure, provided Xiaomi responds to reports that its phones have a gaping security flaw.
