Microsoft unveils a new Nokia feature phone

Microsoft has today announced that there will be a new Nokia branded feature phone releasing soon.

The news comes despite Microsoft announcing earlier this year that it would sell off the Nokia feature phone business to FIH Mobile for $350 million.

So, while it seems like feature phones are still being manufactured by Microsoft, what exactly is the 216 all about?

For starters, despite its basic nature, the handset looks quite nice. A physical dial pad sits below a 2.4inch QVGA (320 x 240p) display and a 1020mAh battery powers it.

There are also two cameras. The primary snapper at the rear is a 0.3MP affair with 2X digital zoom and at the front there’s a 0.3MP VGA camera.

Sadly, there is no LTE support in the 216 only EDGE. What’s more is there is no WiFi adapter in the phone but honestly, this is meant to be basic.

On paper at least, the 216 looks like a solid little phone that can connect to the internet. There’s even space for a 32GB microSD card which is a nice touch.

A feature phone is only as good as its price and while local pricing (and availability) is yet to be confirmed, The Verge reports the 216 will hit India with a retail price of $37 (~R510).

While its not as cheap as the Freedom 251, it isn’t as marred by controversy as the aforementioned handset.

We’re holding thumbs that the 216 comes to South Africa where a number of folks still use a feature phone.
