From the kitchen to your door in 30 min: UberEATS arrives in Joburg

Joburg has once again become the testing ground for a major first-in-Africa Uber project with the arrival of food delivery service, UberEATS.

Launched for the first time Canada last year, UberEATS is a separate app from the normal Uber transport app.

UberEATS partners with various local restaurants, particularly those which aren’t already on any delivery platform, to offer services to anyone within a 3.5 km radius.

How it works

All you do is download the app, view the restaurants available and their menus, place your order and it’ll arrive at your doorstep in 35 minutes or less – that’s the UberEATS promise.

You can submit any special dietary requirements or preferences (for example a well done steak) on the app and it will be received by the kitchen making your order.

It’ll take around eight minutes from the time your food is ready to arrive via two-wheel courier vehicle to you. The app has a track order feature, so you’ll be able to see how far the courier is.

There is no minimum order size, so you can order any meal of any size and the delivery fee is set at a standard price of R20.

On the restaurants’ side, a WiFi enabled iPad supplied by Uber will run a dashboard where they’ll be able to view orders.

Like with the Uber transport service, you’ll be able to link the app to your credit or cheque card for easy, cashless payments. Cash payments will be available at a later stage.

UberEATS will kick off its operations in northern Joburg from tomorrow at 11am. Uber plans to expand it to the rest of the city and Gauteng later this year and South Africa at large, early next year.

UberEATS will be available 24 hours a day, 365 days a week, depending on which restaurants are open.”UberEATS’ mission is to make eating effortless, at any time, for any one,” said Dave Kitley, Uber SA’s operations and logistics manager.

Rate your order

While Uber lets you rate your driver, UberEATS lets you rate the service from the courier and the food from the restaurant itself. This will help restaurants gauge the response from users and see where they’re doing well and where they need to improve.

“UberEATS is a new way of marketing. Restaurants get exposure to highly engaged new customers,” Kitley said.

As part of the launch, all new users get a R100 promo code to use on their first order.

Download the UberEATS app for Android or iOS.
