Reports suggest Samsung Galaxy Note 7 batteries are catching fire

We’re not in the business of spreading rumours but a number of reports that Samsung Galaxy Note 7 batteries are exploding have us concerned.

South Korean news site, Yonhap News Agency, is reporting that 0.1% of Samsung Galaxy Note 7 handsets house a “problematic battery”. The agency cites a Samsung official who spoke under condition of anonymity.

The official suggests that Samsung will recall all Note 7 handsets that have been sold and those that are currently with distributors and retailers.

“Products installed with the problematic battery account for less than 0.1 percent of the entire volume sold. The problem can be simply resolved by changing the battery, but we’ll come up with convincing measures for our consumers,” said the official.

In a Youtube video, Ariel Gonzalez alleges that his Galaxy Note 7 caught fire shortly after he removed it from the charger. You can see images and hear his explanation of the incident in the video we’ve embedded below.

Samsung has not yet responded to these allegations in any official capacity and according to the anonymous representative it’s likely that we won’t hear anything from the manufacturer today.

“Global discussions are under way about matters such as how to deal with products delivered to dealers. Results of the investigation and relevant countermeasures will be made public this weekend or early next week at the latest,” they said.

The official launch of the Galaxy Note 7 locally was delayed last month so the impact on local Sammy fans is minimal at worst.

The handset was meant to hit local shelves today but due to “overwhelming global demand” the release was pushed to 23rd September.

Let’s hope that if these reports are valid that Samsung manages to fix the problem, we were quite looking forward to the follow up to last year’s Galaxy Note 5.
