Pokémon GO officially launched in South Africa

Pokémon GO is now officially available for download in South Africa.

While we’ve had to wait almost three months, a post from the game’s developer on Twitter confirmed the launch.

Now, if you head on over to the Google Play Store or iOS App Store with all your settings indicating that you are in South Africa, you will not be turned away.

Before now the only way for local trainers to download the the app was to create fake accounts with the region set to a location where the game was already launched.

Alternatively, Android users could simply sideload the app and use it regardless of what kind of Google account they had. The big problem there (aside from the apparent ethical one) was that they risked the downloading malware if they did this.

Luckily South African no longer have to worry about jumping through any of those hoops or worrying about anything aside from the data cost of downloading the app.

Despite that, the game already boasted a large player-base in the country even before its official launch. Recently hundreds of people swarmed to Montecasino to partake in a Pokémon GO hunt organised on Facebook by fans.

If you want to know what all the fuss has been about head over to the iTunes Store or Play Store now. Just remember to enjoy this game responsibly – there have already been quite a few accidents caused by players who just can’t tear themselves away from collecting the cute little creatures in the game.
