Turtle Rock to stop work on Evolve

Bad news for monster hunters – and the big beasties themselves – who battle on the planet of Shear: Evolve developer Turtle Rock has announced it’s no longer going to support the game.

In an official blog post entitled ‘Our Final Message To Our Evolve Community‘, studio co-founder Chris Ashton stated that, effective immediately, all support for the game has ended. He also went on to say that this decision was not the studio’s choice.

“This is the life of AAA game developers who aren’t self-funded and don’t own their own IP. We don’t get to make the call,” Ashton wrote. “We all know that going in but we still sign the dotted line because we love what we do.”

“We are happy to have gotten the opportunity to do something risky, something new and innovative. We created a brand new Sci-Fi world. We got to go to planet Shear and interact with alien flora and fauna. We got to hunt down, trap and kill giant monsters together. We got to BE the monster. What an awesome experience.”

It’s not unfair to say that Evolve has had a bit of a rough existence since its release back in 2015.  Initially, Turtle Rock’s asymmetrical shooter – in which four players controlling a motley group of hunters ganged up on a fifth playing a gigantic monster – was sold as a full-price standalone game for console and PC.

This year, after its multiplayer lobbies were found to contain a paltry 155 players, Turtle Rock made the decision to turn the PC version of the game into a Free-To-Play (FTP) affair, in the hope of attracting more players. Evolve Stage 2, as it became known, resulted in a massive increase in the game’s user base, but gradually the numbers dropped off over time.

What Ashton’s announcement means for the current crop of players is anyone’s guess. As Ashton points out, Turtle Rock don’t own the Evolve IP so it will likely be left up to publisher 2K Interactive to decide what to do with the game. All we know at this stage is that Evolve Stage 2 will not be coming to consoles.
