Map Monday: Listen to Glitter trance, Kwaito & every other music genre known to man

You may be able to name around a maximum of 20 to 30 music genres that exist in the world today, but did you know that there are almost 1 500 known to man?

This is according to a really cool musical map called Every Noise At Once, created by US coder and self-proclaimed Spotify genre taxonomist, Glenn McDonald, which lists every single genre of music available on the streaming platform and plays it back in real time, as it streams.

Every Noise lists sub-genres under a major genre like House, R&B, etc.

“This is an ongoing attempt at an algorithmically-generated, readability-adjusted scatter-plot of the musical genre-space, based on data tracked and analyzed for 1496 genres by Spotify. The calibration is fuzzy, but in general down is more organic, up is more mechanical and electric; left is denser and more atmospheric, right is spikier and bouncier,” McDonald says, explains why the sites lists genres from right to left and centre, going downwards.

On the map you can also click on it to see another map, listing the names of artists featured under it. You can also look up where artists fall under the map by entering their name into the search bar.

What’s even cooler about Every Noise is that’s just one map in a series of music genre maps McDonald has made. Others include, The Sounds of Places, which plots countries as if they were genres, We Built This City On, which follows genres to their cities of origin and more.
