Redditor promises to buy thousands of people a copy of Pokémon Sun & Moon

Eighteen hours ago an historic event took place on Reddit concerning the upcoming Pokémon games Sun and Moon.

A user by the handle “PassingThroughRider” created a text post in the subreddit dedicated to Pokémon. It read:

If I get 100 upvotes, I’ll buy everyone who upvotes a copy of Sun and Moon

I’m rich and bored. Make me proud Reddit!

Leave a comment below after upvoting so I know to message you to send a copy.

If you’ve never been on Reddit, an “upvote” is the equivalent of a like on Facebook. In essence, this user is promising a free copy of an upcoming, admittedly expensive game to anyone for clicking a button.

Now, granted this offer depends on the post reaching 100 upvotes.  At the time of writing it has 5 315 upvotes and 91 472 comments.

Every time we reload the pages there are dozens more upvotes and comments and running the quick and dirty maths is scary. The local price for either Sun or Moon is R645 per copy. If PassingThroughRider plans to honour their promise and buy a copy of both games for everyone who upvoted this post, it would cost R3 428 175. Yes, almost three and a half million rand.

Call us cynical, but we don’t think this will happen. There is nothing legally binding in a Reddit post and even someone with more money than brains may balk at having to spend over R3m on games for a bunch of strangers. If it does though, well we have already upvoted and commented just in case, which we guess was the point.

In true Reddit fashion many clones have already popped up including one promising free Nintendo 3DSs to play the game on.

Remember when we said this was a historic moment for the site? It’s either going to be historically amazing if anyone gets anything for free, but it’s probably going to be historically stupid.
