SABC board inquiry postponed

Those who had warmed up their popcorn and poured a big glass of soda in anticipation of watching the inquiry into the fitness of the SABC board to hold office are in for some bad news.

Parliament’s hearings have been postponed until this Friday after SABC Chairman Mbulaheni Maguvhe applied for an urgent interdict with the Western Cape High Court.

“The hearings will have to be put on hold because of this interdict,” Committee Chair Vincent Smith told Eyewiteness News, adding that if the court dismissed Maguvhe’s application outright, the committee was ready to proceed.

“We are confident that if a decision is taken by Friday or Saturday, we will be in a position to kickstart the process on Monday,” Smith said.

Smith also added that while he respected the right of any citizen to make approach the courts, the timing of Maguvhe’s application ahead of the inquiry would have to be addressed by the committee.

This means that one more talking point has been added to a list of issues that – going by this year’s news cycle – is probably the size of a phone book right now.

When the committee convenes it will be interviewing a lengthy list of 30 witnesses that include former and current employees and Minister of Communications Faith Muthambi.
