EFF wants you to help nominate interim SABC board

With the Parliamentary SABC inquiry set to resume tomorrow, the EFF has invited the public to submit names of individuals befitting to sit on the interim board once the inquiry wraps up.

Tomorrow will see former SABC board chairperson’s Ellen Tshabalala and Ben Ngubane appearing as the final witnesses before the inquiry’s ad hoc committee.

The SABC currently has no non-executive board members, after all of them – including its defiant chairperson – resigned last year.

After that, the committee will be tasked with putting together recommendations for interventions in the SABC and the Portfolio Committee on Communications will then have to appoint members of an interim board while proceedings to establish a permanent way move along.

Suggestions from all political parties represented in the portfolio committee will be taken into consideration.

“EFF has noted that a lot of capable men and women of integrity who are seasoned in terms of institutional leadership have grown reluctant to sit in boards of government institutions,” the party said in a statement. “This is because of the loss of credibility suffered by these institutions due to undue political interference by the ruling party.”

The party put part of the blame for the “collapse” of the SABC on the ANC’s “insistence on appointing under-experienced and weak board members so that they can manipulate and control them; subsequently controlling and manipulating the entire SABC”.

“The EFF therefore calls on members of the public to submit to the EFF names of individuals who are seasoned and available to serve in the SABC interim board,” it added, also calling on those who are able to sit on the interim board not to shy away from the posts.

The EFF did not specify which platforms the public can use to submit these suggestions, but the party is most active on its Twitter account. It also has an official email address (communications@effonline.org).
