Vodacom is still the most expensive network for voice calls – study

With 2017 well underway one of the things you might want to consider changing is your cellphone contract.

This nugget of advice comes to us from Tarific, which has analysed the cellular packages offered by South Africa’s mobile network operators.

The key finding of the study reveals that South Africans could save an average of 18% on their monthly cellular bill just by switching contracts when their existing contract comes up for renewal.

If you happen to be looking for a new network Tariffic found that Telkom and Cell C offer the cheapest voice contracts. Curiously, while other network operators have decreased their prices Vodacom’s Smart contracts have become more expensive over the last two years.

Data is not falling

Despite calls for the price of data to come down, Tariffic has seen no major movement in the price of connectivity.

The study found that Cell C’s data prices have fallen by 5% but MTN has increased the price of data by the same amount.

The reason for data pricing seeing little to no fluctuation is because they’re far less complex says Tariffic chief executive officer, Antony Seeff.

“The structure of data packages is much simpler than voice packages,” explains Seeff.

“Voice packages come with a different quantum of inclusive value whether it is inclusive Rand value to be used, inclusive voice minutes, data, and SMSs, or a combination of the two. Data packages only come with a certain amount of inclusive data and an associated out-of-bundle rate when you deplete your data,” says the CEO.

At present there are 40 cellular contract options available to South Africans which is quite a daunting number to have to sift through to find the right one for your needs.

While the CEO says that this spread of contracts may be confusing for some, it is a good thing. “The large number of different packages available could be good for consumers – if they were aware what packages are right for them,” says Seeff.

To make things a bit easier for you should you decide you want to save a bit of dough every month Tariffic has its own comparison tool which can help you sift through all the available contracts.
