Hugo Barra joins Facebook’s VR team after leaving Xiaomi

Earlier this month Xiaomi vice president of international Hugo Barra announced that he would be leaving the Chinese manufacturer to move back to Silicon Valley.

The overhanging question was where Barra would go next and now we know.

The Brazilian tech geek will be joining Facebook’s virtual reality efforts where, among other responsibilities, he will lead the Oculus team.

Mark Zuckerberg made the announcement that Barra was joining his crew via a post on his Facebook page.

“I’ve known Hugo for a long time, starting when he helped develop the Android operating system, to the last few years he’s worked at Xiaomi in Beijing bringing innovative devices to millions of people,” said Zuckerberg.

The Facebook founder says that Barra shares his belief that virtual and augmented reality will be the next major computing platform. “Hugo is going to help build that future, and I’m looking forward to having him on our team,” Zuckerberg said.

Curious to us is Barra’s decision to join Facebook’s VR efforts – particularly Oculus – while it faces a lawsuit brought against it by ZeniMax Media.

ZeniMax Media and Facebook are currently involved in a lawsuit in which Oculus is accused of pilfering information from the parent company of Bethesda and id Software. This information was allegedly used to make the Oculus Rift the VR headset it is today, a claim both Zuckerberg and Oculus founder Palmer Luckey refute.

Despite the litigious state of affairs we’re excited to see what Barra does as the head of Facebook’s VR efforts, perhaps he can make VR more accessible and make 2017 the year that the technology becomes ingrained in our everyday lives.
