With a new Mass Effect coming out this March, the famous intergalactic RPG is one everyone’s minds once again, including makers and a Facebook page called “Optimistic Geometry“.

Far from being a fan page for the game or anything actually related to geometry, it’s more of a live blog of someone trying to recreate the M-3 Predator pistol seen in Mass Effect 2 and 3.

Unlike some of the static 3D printed props we feature regularly on this site, the Predator pistol is different. Many of the guns in the series fold up when not equipped, and that’s what’s being attempted with this prop.

Below you can see the results of the project thus far after three prototypes:

What you just watched is a combination of many custom 3D printed parts as well as a a very intricate system of motors, gears and electronics that allow the pistol to fold and unfold itself.

Looking through the page’s uploaded photos and you’ll see many of the in progress shots that lead up to this prototype. It’s an incredible little feat of engineering that we don’t think can be covered in a DIY Instructables or tutorial. That being said, we’d love one of these for ourselves.

Partially disassembled side view. This picture doesn’t really show off how complex the mechanism is.
