Student registrations at SA universities going smoothly so far

Registrations for the 2017 academic year at a number of South African universities are going well, without any major issues so far.

The University of Johannesburg (UJ) opened its registration period on on 8th January and has to date had 25% of registering students, totalling over 13 000, completing the process and ready to kick the year off.

This number is in line with previous years’ registration processes and affirms the positive effect of its online-only registration system put into place a few years ago, the university said.

“UJ’s online registration system and chat facility, plus the call centre, dealing with personal enquiries and giving guidance to students, are all contributing to make the 2017 registration process as effortless and seamless as possible. The call centre handled more than 85 000 calls and the UJ mobisite dealt with 89 818 queries and closed on 13th January 2017,” UJ Registrar, Professor Kinta Burger told SA Government News.

The Vaal University of Technology (VUT) has also recorded positive processes at its Vanderbijlpark Campus south of Johannesburg since opening registrations on 9th January.

According to VUT management, since launching its self-help registration process last year, the 2017 registration process was made easy for all students and almost everything they needed to do was done under one roof, eliminating a lot of glitches.

On the country’s coast, the Durban University of Technology (DUT), which started registrations on Monday, hasn’t had any issues, but is however dealing with the influx of 84 855 first-year applications which have had to be narrowed down to 7 000 to suit available places.

Last year, registrations across the country were disrupted by #FeesMustFall protests who refused to let other students register while they protested for the scrapping of high tuition fees.

This created fears of another round of protests this year, however students leaders have promised not to interfere with registrations.
