Man builds life-size X-wing from Star Wars for only $400

“You can build a life-size Star Wars X-wing fighter to store in your driveway and impress your neighbors!”

That’s maker Joshua Woolley’s introduction to his massive X-wing replica that measures in at 24 feet long and 20 feet wide (7,3 X 6 metres).

Almost even more impressive is that Woolley claims that he built the starfighter for only $400 (~R5 314) worth of steel pipe, coroplast, zip ties and duct tape. Lots and lots of duct tape.

The pipes were used to create a frame onto which the corrugated plastic was placed to create the hull. You can see some of the bare frame in the gallery below, including a great for scale picture of the main wing section on the back of bakkie (that’s what we call pickup trucks in South Africa).

Woolley has created a build log of this project which he has posted on Instructables. You’re going need to be very handy with metal work and a variety of other DIY skills if you’re hoping to replicate this project.

If you’re not in the market to do that, we still suggest you give that link a look. Seeing the X-wing go from a sketch to a finished build is a fun time, and you’re sure to be inspired.
