OR Tambo management keeping eye on unconfirmed 4-day metered taxi strike

Reports of metered taxi drivers holding a fresh strike to block entrances at OR Tambo International Airport are unconfirmed at present, but the airport’s management says it’s monitoring the situation.

Late yesterday, the Ekurhuleni Metro Police Department (EMPD) warned of possible road and freeway closures and OR Tambo entrance and exit blockades from today until Friday by metered taxi drivers working at the airport.

The drivers are allegedly not  satisfied with the response they received from the provincial Department of Transport, following last week’s go slow and road blockade on the R24 and R21.

The drivers had called for Uber drivers to be removed from Gauteng roads and to have their operating licences revoked.

There were no signs of any strike action on the roads or at the airport this morning. OR Tambo management told htxt.africa that the EMPD informed them that roads were clear and would provide updates should anything change.
