Xiaomi Mi 6 announced and it has Apple-bottom genes

The Xiaomi Mi 5 was one of our favourite smartphones of 2016. While it wasn’t nearly as powerful as the Samsung S7 it’s sub-R10 000 price point made it incredibly attractive.

Today the firm announced the follow to that handset, the Mi 6, and we’re as excited about this handset as your dog is to visit the vet.

The reason? Xiaomi has ditched the 3.5mm jack.

That makes the Chinese firm the second manufacturer to remove the ubiquitous headphone jack. Last year you’ll recall that Apple omitted a 3.5mm jack in its iPhone 7, a move it described as “courageous”.

Aside from that horrid omission the Mi 6 looks rather good, on paper and physically.

Driving things along below the 5.15inch display is a Qualcomm Snapdragon 835 chipset, the same one that is in the Samsung S8.

That said, the S8 South Africans will be receiving will likely use Samsung’s own Exynos chipset so the Mi 6 might be the first phone we see in SA that sports the latest Qualcomm chipset. That is presuming we get the handset here.

Xiaomi has paired that chipset with 6GB of RAM which is great for those that believe – like us – you can never have too much RAM.

The rear snapper will be a dual-lens 12MP affair with one lens being wide angle and the other providing additional focal length.

Xiaomi has always played rhythm guitar to Huawei’s lead and perhaps this new handset is the firms way of trying to wrest back market share.

With that having been said the Mi 6 will retail at prices starting from 2 499 yuan (~R4 800) which is 1 000 yuan more expensive than the Mi 5 was at launch.

The absence of a 3.5mm jack raises many questions but Xiaomi knows what their customers want better than we do so we’ll reserve judgement until we get our hands on a Mi 6.

As to when that will be – we aren’t quite sure. We have contacted Xiaomi’s local distributor and when we receive a response we will update you.

For now though we want to hear from you, does the lack of a headphone jack influence your buying decision? Let us know in the comments.
