Netflix refuses to pay ransom, Orange Is The New Black season 5 appears online

A hacker (or group of hackers) known as thedarkoverlord has given fans of Netflix Original – Orange Is The New Black – an early surprise: most of season five of the series.

We say “most of” because thedarkoverlord is three episodes short of a complete season with the torrent file only containing episodes 1 – 10.

“We’ve decided to release Episodes 2-10 of “Orange Is The New Black” Season 5 after many lengthy discussions at the office where alcohol was present,” the hackers wrote in a post quoted by Ars Technica. “Do note that there are 13 episodes. However, we were so early when we acquired the copies that post hadn’t gotten around to Episodes 11-13. Perhaps Netflix will consider releasing the season earlier now that the cat’s out of the bag?”

Ars Technica reports that the hackers breached the network of Larson Studios which is how they came into possession of the content. Larson Studios is an audio post-production company used by Netflix and other major production companies.

The breach happened last year at which point the hacker attempted to hold Larson Studios to ransom for 36 television series and one film. The ransom for 50 bitcoin (R980 000) failed and thedarkoverlord turned its attention to the production houses of the shows it stole.

Netflix did not bow to the demands of the hacker and as such the latest season of OITNB was released online at the weekend, well, part of it at least.

“We’re not quite done yet, though. We’re calling you out: ABC, National Geographic, Fox, IFC, and of course Netflix, still. There’s more Netflix on the feasting menu soon (in addition to the other studios, of course),” said thedarkoverlord.

Our question is whether ardent fans of OITNB are so desperate for the latest season that they’d be willing to wait for 11GBs to download, fuss with cables or Airplay and then sit through 10 episodes of a show they love in standard definition with watermarks everywhere.

Something tells us it would be easier to wait for Netflix to release the next season.
