Apple and Nokia reach agreement and settle patent dispute

Back in December 2016 Apple and Nokia sued each other over the use of Nokia patents.

To be fair Apple wasn’t suing Nokia directly but rather patent assertion entities that were acting on the Finnish firm’s behalf, collecting money from patent agreements. Nokia however, brought litigation to Apple’s doorstep as a result of the initial legal action.

Today the two firms announced that not only had litigation been settled but the two firms had agreed to a multi-year patent license.

“This is a meaningful agreement between Nokia and Apple,” chief legal officer at Nokia Maria Varsellona said in a statement. “It moves our relationship with Apple from being adversaries in court to business partners working for the benefit of our customers.”

As part of the agreement between the firms, Nokia will provide “certain network infrastructure product and services to Apple” while Apple will continue to stock Nokia’s digital health products (once known as Withings) in its retail and online stores.

“We are pleased with this resolution of our dispute and we look forward to expanding our business relationship with Nokia,” Apple chief executive officer Jeff Williams said in a statement.

Details of the agreement are confidential according to Nokia but Apple will make a payment to the Finnish firm up front.
