This LEGO set is one metre tall: A look at the NASA Apollo Saturn V

LEGO recently released a set that’s a real treat for any space fans out there: it’s the NASA Apollo Saturn V (set 21309).

This huge set forms parts of the company’s Ideas programme, in which fans can submit their models to be voted upon by the community, with enough votes helping to turn nominated builds into an official set.

Some standouts from Ideas include WALL-E, the Ghostbusters’ Ecto-1 and the playable ball maze.

This set is the biggest one released so far, coming in at (cleverly) 1969 pieces, and packed with features that make it more than a display model. Points for you if you know the significance of that year and how it might relate to this particular set.

Check out a review of the set from the channel Jangbricks below:

If you’re frothing at the mouth hoping to get yourself one, there’s some bad news. Firstly, the price overseas is $120 (~R1540) and secondly, experience has taught us that you can expect that price to be much closer to R2 000 when it arrives here… if it gets here all.

Yes these big speciality sets have a very short print run (the amount of time LEGO actively creates the set and sends it out for sale), and of course there’s the problem that they usually take months to reach our shores.

Our advice for prospective buyers is to phone up your local large LEGO  shop and put your name down for a pre-order. Some shops we can suggest are Aladdin’s Caves in JoburgPops Toys in Pretoria and Kiddiwinks in Cape Town.

This set released recently overseas and they’re being snapped up fast, so hopefully we’ll get a chance to buy them over here.
