400 residents at Cape informal settlement affected by storm flooding

Over 400 people in one informal settlement area have been affected by flooding due to the severe weather currently sweeping across the Western Cape.

According to the City of Cape Town’s Disaster Risk Management Centre, 97 dwellings were reported flooded in Macassar Village, an informal settlement, leaving 400 people affected, while 362 dwellings were affected in Disa Park and Madiba Square in Hout Bay, affecting hundreds more.

The city said while the South African Red Cross Society is providing humanitarian relief, no emergency shelter has been activated in Macassar Village, while emergency shelter has been activated in the Green Hall and with an NGO in Hout Bay.

“Other city departments are clearing away uprooted trees and other blockages that have occurred as a result of the rain and gale-force winds and attending to residents in Council-owned properties and those in informal settlements requiring assistance with damage to their structures,” the city said.

It is confirmed that an elderly man died earlier today when a wall collapsed onto his wendy house, while four others passed away in a fire on Simonsvlei Farm in the Drakenstein Municipality.

“We appeal to the public to remain indoors if possible and to steer clear of coastal areas as the frontal system is coinciding with a spring tide, resulting in massive swells,” the City of Cape Town said.
