The first season of Pokémon is now available in HD

The original first season of the Pokémon animated series has been released in HD and can be bought digitally right now.

This was announced yesterday with little fanfare on a simple splash page on Pokemon.com.

You’re able to pick it up from iTunesGoogle Play, and Amazon.

Clicking through you may find one or all of the stores sending you away based on your country. The Google Play store, for example, won’t even load the page telling us that “TV on Google Play is not available in your country yet.”

You may need to mess around with spoofing your location with a VPN or bogus overseas address if you want to “legally” watch them.

iTunes and Amazon are nice enough to at least show us the pages, and have them listed at $2.99 (~R38.90) per episode or $21.99 (R286,10) for the 13-episode season.

We got a free taste of what this HD release looks like thanks to the Official Pokémon YouTube Channel. It’s the beginning theme and you can crank all the way up to 1080p. Just keep in mind that the animation hasn’t been redone or anything fancy like that, and it’s still letter boxed at the old 4X3 aspect ratio. We assume this is just a simple upscale job.

If that left you a bit underwhelmed we’re going to take this chance to point you in the direction of a great YouTube series by YourMovieSucksDOTorg.

It’s a highly edited series with commentary about the show. We must warn you not to watch it if you’re easily offended however, and not to get too attached.

The 12 videos in the playlist below are all that will ever exist as one member of the team has left. Enjoy it while it lasts.
