Facebook has hit 2 billion users

The world’s biggest social network has hit a major milestone. Facebook now has two billion active monthly users, the company announced.

“We’re making progress connecting the world, and now let’s bring the world closer together. It’s an honor to be on this journey with you,” creator and CEO, Mark Zuckerberg said.

Facebook reached one billion users back in October 2012, almost nine years after it was launched. Just two months ago, it clocked 1.94 billion users.

More than 750 million new Facebook friendships are formed each day globally, while in Europe, Middle East and Africa (EMEA) 180 million new Facebook friendships are formed.

Each day in EMEA 450 million people use the “Love” reaction button, more than 175 million people click on it globally. More than one billion people use Groups every month and on average, over 800 million people like something on Facebook.

New features

To celebrate the milestone Facebook announced a few new features.

After you reacts to a friend’s post with love, wish someone happy birthday, or create a group, you will see a message in your News Feed thanking you for doing so.

“We are launching a personalised video to celebrate bringing the world closer together. You may see your video in your News Feed or by visiting facebook.com/goodaddsup,” Facebook said.

“We are excited to continue to build products that allow people to connect with one another, regardless of where they live or what language they speak. Thank you for being part of our global community,” it concluded.
