Western Cape schools to be shut down as extreme weather approaches

[UPDATE as at 3:30pm: The University of Cape Town has also cancelled all classes for tomorrow. Read UCT Vice-Chancellor Max Price’s statement, here]

The Western Cape Education Department has issued a directive for all schools in the province to be closed tomorrow amid reports of extreme rain, snow and winds forecast to hit the province.

Heavy storms, snowfall and possible flooding has been forecast to hit the Western Cape from tomorrow until Thursday, with residents urged to stay safe this week.

“After extensive consultation with all roleplayers and at the recommendation of the Provincial Disaster Risk Management and SA Weather Service, I have taken the unprecedented decision in the interest of learner and educator safety to close schools in the Western Cape tomorrow, 7th June 2017,” said WCED Head of Education, Brian Schreuder.

School transport is also suspended for tomorrow.

“Our primary concern is the safety of learners and staff. The storm may damage some schools, which could place learners and staff at risk, as well as those who commute to school, especially in rural areas,” Schreuder said.

Schreduer said the department is cognisant that this decision will disrupt school programmes tomorrow, but that it will be working with schools to ensure that the programme returns to normal.

He requestede the understanding and cooperation of schools and parents in the circumstances.

Schools will reopen on Thursday.
