UK teen accused of selling DDoS software to criminals

A teenager in Stockport, UK has been accused of helping cyber criminals attack “millions of websites” by selling distributed denial of service software.

West Midlands police claim that the software 18-year-old Jack Chappell sold was used to cripple the online banking system of NatWest in 2015.

An investigation that led to the teen’s arrest was led by the West Midlands Regional Cyber Crime Unit and assisted by Israeli Police, the FBI, and the Europol European Cybercrime Centre.

Chappell has also been accused of attacking the websites of Netflix, Amazon, Virgin Media, the BBC and the National Crime Agency among others.

“He has been charged with impairing the operation of computers under the Computer Misuse Act, plus encouraging or assisting an offence and money laundering crime proceeds together with an American national,” authorities said in a statement. The American national was not named.

If selling software that was used to execute a DDoS wasn’t enough, its alleged the teen also ran an online help desk for his business.

The teen is set to appear in the Manchester Magistrates Court today.
