How to find simple ways to make a big difference on #MandelaDay

Whether or not donating 67 minutes or more towards a worthy cause truly can be called activism, is a debate for another time.

But for now, for those who do want to get involved in doing something for charity on Mandela Day, but don’t know where to start, there are a few places you can look to for help.

Tuesday, 18th July, will mark International Mandela Day. It’s also the day late former President Nelson Mandela would’ve turned 99 on this day and since 2009, South Africans and others around the world have been encouraged to follow in the example Mandela was with regards to selflessness and help those in need around them.

Below are a few good platforms that can help point you in the right direction.

forgood

forgood is an online directory of sorts which matches South African non-profits in various categories with volunteers and donors.

You can choose whether you’d like to give your time, money or even expertise, depending on each cause’s needs.

At the moment, forgood is running a campaign this month where you can shop its online pop-up store. Every sale made will earn income for one of the causes listed on forgood.

GEM Project

The GEM Project is a mobile platform that allows you to find causes in and around your area.

The platform features activities throughout the year and not just on Mandela Day, so you can become an active participator beyond 18th July, should you wish to be.

Users also earn themselves personal rewards known as GEMs, which can be redeemed for airtime, prepaid electricity, data or movie tickets.

You can download GEM via USSD by dialling *120*GEM1 # or as an app on Google Play or iTunes.
