Ecigs might actually be helping folks quit smoking

Gum and nicotine patches used to be the defacto way for folks hoping to quit smoking to get over the addiction but it appears a new player has entered the field – ecigarettes

While the evidence that ecigs help folks quit smoking has been anecdotal a new study has found a link between those that favour vapour over tobacco smoke.

The results of a survey of 161 054 respondents have been published in the journal BMJ. The study reveals that a decrease in smoking was associated with an increase in vaping.

The study also found that in 2014/2015 smokers who attempted to quit by using an ecig as a replacement were more successful at kicking the habit than those that didn’t.

When comparing that period to other years the researchers discovered that ecigs helped folks quit not only on an individual level but at a population level.

The problems with this research

While this study does represent the largest group of people using ecigs ever polled, it’s not without its flaws.

For instance this study only pooled responses from US citizens. The researchers also note that several events in the US might have skewed the results somewhat namely an increase in the national cigarette tax in 2009 of 158%.

The study does note that there were no notable changes in the amount of folks quitting but rather found that taking up smoking decreased significantly.

An aggressive media campaign that urged citizens to stop smoking may also have been linked to quitting.

Finally, this research was conducted via a survey and responses don’t provide a full view of the quitting process.

With that having been said it does appear as if vaping can help you quit smoking.

Whether inhaling chemicals laced with tropical fruit flavours and nicotine is safer than lighting a cigarette is still up for debate so before you head down to your local vape store to quit your 20-a-day habit we suggest you do a bit more reading into the technology.
