AMD breaches the high-end GPU market with Radeon RX Vega

AMD has been trying its best to establish itself as the best choice for gamers for the better part of a year.

The Radeon RX series was decently priced, the firm’s Ryzen processors perform admirably but enthusiast gamers have had to turn to NVIDIA for high-end GPUs, until today.

Team Red has revealed the Radeon RX Vega 64 and Radeon RX Vega 56 graphics processors and apparently these GPUs will compete with the NVIDIA GTX 1080 and GTX 1070 respectively.

The RX Vega 64 will house 64 compute units, 4096 stream processors and 8GB of High Bandwith Memory 2 (HBM2) with a bandwidth of 484GBps. The base clock speed of the GPU comes in at 1 247 GHz which can be boosted to 1 546MHz.

The RX Vega 56 will house (you guessed it) 56 compute units along with 3 584 stream processors. The Vega 56 will house and the same 8GB of HBM2 though the memory bandwidth only comes in at 410GBps. This lower spec’d card will have a base clock of 1 156MHz and a boost of 1 471MHz.

Then, AMD also revealed the RX Vega 64 Liquid Cooled Edition. While the card as the same configuration of the standard RX Vega 64 its base clock measures in at 1 406MHz and when boosted it can hit 1 677MHz thanks to the liquid cooling.

Each card will house three DisplayPort 1.4 ports as well as an HDMI 2.0 port.

The miners are coming

It’s no secret that getting your hands on an AMD Radeon GPU these days is about as successful as finding chicken teeth. Seriously, head over to Evetech and the only Radeon cards you can find are the RX 550 cards.

That’s not to say its the fault of Evetech, cryptocurrency miners have been snapping up GPUs as soon as they become available.

In an attempt to stave off miners, AMD has created ” Radeon packs”. These bundles offer discounts on FreeSync monitors, Ryzen 7 CPU and motherboard combos as well as two free games. The hope is that gamers will be inspired to pick up these packs along with a Vega GPU rather than just buying GPUs for mining rigs.

The packs will give gamers a $200 discount on a monitor, $100 discount on the CPU and mobo combo and two free games (Wolfenstein 2: The New Colussus and Prey). You can find more information about the packs and the GPUs themselves over on the official Vega web page.

The air cooled RX Vega 64 and Vega 56 will launch at $499 and $399 respectively. South African pricing has yet to be confirmed.
