YouTube, Google Maps and Search are being tailored for Nigerians

At a Google for Nigeria event held in Lagos this week Google announced a number of improvements its making to its services so that they are more useful for Nigerians.

The first of these improvements is YouTube Go.

“Designed from the ground up, YouTube Go lets you discover, save and share videos you love in a way that’s transparent about the size of downloads,” said Google.

YouTube Go improves the viewing experience for those watching content on slower connections. The firm has been testing the new version of YouTube since June and says it will launch a beta version of the app later this year.

Maps is also getting an improvement. Google has said over the last few months is has added thousands of addresses, streets and over 100 000 Nigerian businesses to Maps.

For those that have never been to the Nigerian capital of Lagos, you can now take a virtual tour of the city thanks to Google Streetview.

Faster, and better search results

Google announced a number of improvements to Search. The most important of which is that search results will apparently load five times faster and use 90% less data.

The firm will also improve the information displayed in its Knowledge Panels which appear in search results.

“We’re connecting people with easy access to the answers to things they care about, displaying knowledge cards for everything from local football teams to Nigerian musicians and actors,” said Google.

800 knowledge cards will be introduced that detail common health and illness symptoms as well as treatments for those symptoms. Google says that it has partnered with the University of Ibadan to make sure that information shared is relevant and accurate.

These are small quality of life improvements but we think they’ll go a long way to improve the lives of users in Nigeria. Our hope is that these improvements eventually worm their way into other parts of Africa as well.
