Intel finally shares 18-core Extreme Edition CPU specs

Intel sent PC enthusiasts into a tizzy when it announced an 18-core CPU at Computex earlier this year.

At the announcement Intel was rather short on details of the i9-7980XE but we now have some details of that processor so strap yourself in.

The 7980XE will have a base speed of 2.6GHz. This can be ramped up to 4.2GHz with Turbo Boost 2.0, and Turbo Boost 3.0 can send that up even further to 4.4GHz.

This beastly processor will also support 68 PCIe 3.0 lanes which means more space for graphics cards and solid-state storage.

So the question then becomes: what is the purpose of this processor given that games will likely only test the 7980XE’s single threaded performance? The short answer is content creation.

Intel says that content creators will notice a 20% improvement in performance while creating virtual reality content, and 4K video editing will be 30% faster.

We must point out that these improvements are in regards to the entire X-series processor line-up which includes the unreleased 14, 16 and 18-core chips as well as the 4, 6, 8 and 10 core chips which are already out.

You can drool over the specs in the graphic below.

The 12 and 14-core X-series processors will be released later this month (28th August) while those looking to get their hands on a 14 or 18-core processor will have to wait a bit longer until release on 25th September.
