CCP bans EVE: Online player over threats of dismemberment

Anyone who plays (or has spent significant amounts of time watching) EVE: Online knows that its players can be a prickly bunch.

In a game where players can see months – even years – of progression destroyed in an afternoon, tempers can easily flare, especially if one’s downfall is the result of betrayal from espionage that frequently occurs in New Eden.

Just ask the members of Circle-Of-Two Alliance; up until yesterday they were part of one of the most powerful and popular factions in EVE: Online. This morning, their empire lies in ruins, because a member of CO2, The Judge, turned out to be a sleeper cell for their enemies.

Last night, The Judge raided CO2’s accounts, reportedly stealing around a trillion ISK (EVE’s in-game currency) in assets and handing over the faction’s space stations to their sworn enemies, TEST and Goonswarm.

This betrayal sent CO2’s leader gigX into such a rage that he threatened to cut off The Judge’s hands. No, I’m not kidding.

The Judge feel free to use your hands by typing here,” gigX wrote. “While you still can.”

Yipe! Well, as if that wasn’t bad enough, it turns out that The Judge and his pals were broadcasting this exchange on Twitch. It wasn’t long before someone from the game’s developer CCP saw it and lowered the ban hammer on gigX.

“It is my sad duty to inform you that your accounts have been permanently banned from our server for making real life threats to another player. This is a serious violation of our END USER LICENSE AGREEMENT and Terms of Service,” PC Gamer has reported CCP as saying.

So there you go. I trust we’ve all learned something from this story.

Think once!
Think twice!
Think: I really shouldn’t threaten other players with dismemberment no matter how cross I get.
