New York to Shanghai in 39 minutes? Space X wants to make that a reality

The worst part of travelling is the actual travelling. Hours upon hours spent in aeroplanes or boats or cars.

Space X is looking to change that completely.

This morning at the International Astronautical Congress in Adelaide, Australia Elon Musk presented the BFR. A large scale rocket that is intended for travel to Mars and perhaps other planets in our solar system. And yes, the name means what you think it means.

Toward the end of his presentation Space X founder and chief executive officer Elon Musk proposed a slightly different use for the massive rocket. Travelling around Earth.

What makes this idea feasible is reusability of rockets. Being able to launch and then reuse a rocket for multiple other launches keeps the cost of building rockets down.

The BFR rocket would travel at a speed of 18 000mph and get you anywhere on Earth in under 60 minutes. The best part is that because you’re travelling through space – no more turbulence during your flight!

Space X hopes to launch the first BFR rocket later this year.
