PS VR is getting an updated headset

Up next in the continuing series of articles that should be entitled “early adaptors, save your money, you fools”, Sony has announced that PS VR upgraded hardware is in the pipeline.

The new headset, which will contain some brand new features, will be made available first in Japan before it makes its way to the western territories.

“The new version, model number CUH-ZVR2, features an updated design that enables the stereo headphone cables to be integrated with the VR headset and a slimmer, streamlined connection cable,” Sony announced on its official blog.

“There’s also an updated Processor Unit that supports HDR pass through, enabling users to enjoy HDR-compatible PS4 content on a TV without having to disconnect the Processor Unit in between the TV and the PS4 system. This function can be used only when the VR headset is turned off.”

The good news for those folk who shelled out the eye-watering amount required to purchase a PS VR when it was launched earlier this year, is that all forthcoming titles will be compatible with your headset. The bad news for you is that you won’t be able to swap an old processor unit for a new one due to the fact that the cables are different.

There’s neither a release date for South Africa at this point, nor is there an RRP available. But hey, given the fact that the PS4 Pro, PS4 Slim, Xbox One S and Xbox One X followed their predecessors in such rapid succession, maybe prospective punters should hold onto their money. The upgraded PS VR’s successor could likely be less than three years away…
