How to avoid being banned in Destiny 2 on PC

Destiny 2 has officially launched on PC and while we’re still waiting on our copy of the game to download we’re almost thankful our playtime of the game has been delayed.

The reason for this is that if you have certain software running while playing the game you can get yourself banned.

To Bungie’s credit this not anything new and has been detailed since the beta back in September but its worth taking into account now especially since bans are permanent and Bungie doesn’t seem to be budging on that.

The big culprit leading to a few bans is streaming and game capture software – OBS and XSplit to be exact.

Destiny 2 does not support the game capture modes of OBS or XSplit in fullscreen.

Players can however switch to Windowed Mode or Borderless Fullscreen and use those programs.

For those that must capture footage in exclusive fullscreen mode Destiny 2 on PC supports hardware capture solutions such as Elgato or your GPU software such as NVIDIA Shadowplay and AMD ReLive.

Players using communication software such as Discord and Mumble should also disable any overlays associated with those programs. Features such as ‘Who is talking’ are not supported in Destiny 2. Notification features don’t seem to be a problem at this particular moment.

Our big sore point is that using hardware monitoring software can result in a ban as well. Yes you read that right FRAPS, EVGA Precision XOC and MSI Afterburner are not supported in Destiny 2.

Bungie says that it has included a frame counter in the PC version but that’s not really the point guys and girls.

Monitoring clock speeds, temperatures and overall performance is half the reason I own a second display, telling me that I can’t insure my PC is running at its peak leaves a bad taste in my mouth.

The problem seems to be with programs that inject code into Destiny 2 so while the programs above are the biggest culprits there may be more.

“The examples listed on this page are not all encompassing, and players may encounter issues with the features of other applications that rely on code being inserted into the game client. Players are to run these applications’ features at their discretion while running Destiny 2,” reads a Bungie support post.

Simply put you need to tread on eggshells when firing up Destiny 2 on PC and that’s a problem. As you’re well aware a PC is not one uniform system, there are numerous hardware configurations with countless more software configurations on top of that. It appears as if Bungie is trying to tame the nature of PCs and that just doesn’t seem like it will end well.

We will be keeping an eye on this as time progresses but for now if you want to continue shooting and looting you’re going to have to tow the line.
