Cell C launches black – movies, music, TV and sport for R5 a day

Today Cell C revealed a secret project its been working on for two years and it could potentially change the game.

That game is streaming and content consumption, and Cell C’s solution is called “black”.

The platform is a strange one and works more like an entertainment portal rather than a pure streaming service such as Netflix or Showmax.

For instance black allows users to place bets or watch live sport from the likes of Chelsea and Manchester United. Cell C insists that black is an entirely separate division and it is also working to allow users to book plane tickets in the future.

black operates on TVs, smartphones, tablets, and browsers with a rather clever way of dealing with payments.

“Today most content platforms require you to pay with a credit card. If you are a Cell C user you can use your airtime to pay for black,” said Cell C chief executive officer Jose Dos Santos.

The service costs R5 a day and that gives you access to a variety of sport. There is also a monthly package that will run you R389 and for access to everything on the platform.

There are also movies to rent starting at R35, or they can be be bought outright for R169. HD quality movies might cost you a bit more, though.

Users can pay for content on a daily, weekly, weekender or monthly rate.

“I don’t think many South Africans can afford R99 or close on that figure once-off every month. This is a solution that helps give those South Africans access,” said Dos Santos.

As for data costs, Cell C will be announcing details about that on 14th November, hopefully that means their  customers will have black zero-rated, but we’ll have to wait for news on that later this month.

black will go live online on 3rd November.
