Forget Thor: 3D print Beta Ray Bill’s hammer instead

With Thor: Ragnarok out there’s been a new wave of fan creations centred around the character and his hammer, but now it’s time for Beta Ray Bill to get some of the spotlight.

This comes in the form of a 1:1, 3D printed prop of the hammer Stormbreaker, created by user The Broken Nerd.

When we spoke to this talented maker he told us that this is one of two designs he created as there are so many variations of the hammer in the comics.

The modelling process only took a few hours in Cinema 4D, but the printing itself took nearly 118 hours – 68 for the head, 30 for the handle and 20 for the pommel and strap pin.

The finishing process involved XTC-3D, primer filler, spot putty and, of course, a lot of sanding. The interesting paint job was done using two coats of gloss black paint and three layers of gold spray paint.

At 3 pounds (1.36 kilograms) the final prop has some heft to it. Not including the strap, it measures in at 21.5″ long and 11″ wide (54,6 X 27.9 centimetres).

To make your own grab the files from Thingiverse and make sure you watch the accompanying video for more information. We also suggest you subscribe to the channel as it’s some of the mist impressive printing we’ve seen in a while.
