The CIA has released the contents of Osama Bin Laden’s hard drive

The Central Intelligence Agency (CIA) has released some of the contents of Osama Bin Laden’s computer hard drive, which was seized in the raid on his compound in May 2011.

The drive contained scanned copies of the former Al Qaeda leader’s journal, audio files and image files including practice reels for speeches, as well as video files that the CIA has descrie as jihadist propaganda.

Nearly 470 000 files in all have been released to the public, which do not include any malware, pornography or any files that have been constitute a threat to US national security – those have been withheld.

“Today’s release of recovered Al-Qaeda letters, videos, audio files and other materials provides the opportunity for the American people to gain further insights into the plans and workings of this terrorist organisation,” said CIA Director Pompeo.

“CIA will continue to seek opportunities to share information with the American people consistent with our obligation to protect national security.”

So far, so expected, but this data release also reveals some aspects about Bin Laden that people may not have expected. You see, alongside the rest of his data, it turns out the former Al Qaeda leader also owned a lot of Hollywood films – the list of which can be read below:

  • Antz
  • Batman Gotham Knight
  • BBC Great Wildlife Moments
  • Biography – Osama bin Laden
  • Cars
  • Chicken Little
  • CNN Presents: World’s Most Wanted
  • Final Fantasy VII
  • Heroes of Tomorrow
  • Home on the Range
  • Ice Age: Dawn of the Dinosaurs
  • In the Footsteps of bin Laden – CNN
  • National Geographic: Kung Fu Killers
  • National Geographic: Inside the Green Berets

These files are part of the cache that hasn’t been released publicly because they’re copyrighted material. Oh, and that also includes several pirated Nintendo games that were also apparently on the drive. Who knew Bin Laden was a Mario fan?
