These Pac-Man family costumes are animated with Arduino

Halloween may be long over but breakdowns and guides for costumes from the day are still coming in, and this Pac-Man family costume may be one of the best.

Maker Ben Muller created this costume for his family with each member getting a panel of LEDs which light up to replicate the pixels for Pac-Man, Ms. Pac-Man and two ghosts for the kids.

Each panel has a large piece of cardboard as the base to keep the costume light. To this the LEDs were added which are controlled by an Arduino Uno and powered by a portable phone charger.

To diffuse the light and give the LEDs that blocky pixel look, drafting paper was laid over the top. It also helps that each light was housed inside of a grid also cut out of cardboard.

If you’d like to make your own version for next Halloween or an upcoming convetion, you can find a guide over on Hackster.io. It’s also got the code for the Arduino and the cutting files for the cardboard, if you’re going to be using a laser cutter for that job.

Pac-Man seems to be a popular inspiration for maker projects. We’ve seen it as a Raspberry Pi case, a kinetic 3D print, and playable on an alarm clock.
