Twitter activates 280 character tweets for most users

Since September Twitter has been testing an expansion of tweets, doubling the amount of characters users could play with.

That feature has now been rolled out to all languages “where cramming was an issue” Twitter said in a statement.

Twitter users that tweet in Japanese, Korean and Chinese will not get a character increase because the firm says these languages have always been able to say more thanks to the density of their writing systems.

“We saw when people needed to use more than 140 characters, they Tweeted more easily and more often. But importantly, people Tweeted below 140 most of the time and the brevity of Twitter remained,” said Twitter product manager Aliza Rosen.

Users will notice that the familiar “140” in tweets is gone and has been replaced by a circle which fills up while you type. There is no number to be seen until you reach the last 20 characters.

While many users have decried the additional characters there are some instances where they are useful. That having been said if your timeline often employs the “thread” style of tweets we suspect some budding writers will be using the new features to publish their latest works.

Or you know, trolls that fill up the entire screen with meaningless ASCII characters that require you to scroll endlessly until you can mute them.
