HP issues software patch after keylogger discovered hiding in drivers

For the second time this year HP users have to patch their systems because a keylogger has been discovered.

This time around the keylogger is less egregious and is disabled by default but what might be of concern is that the keylogger might be on systems not manufactured by HP.

The reason for that is that the bug is a debug trace that forms part of the Synaptics Touchpad driver.

The flaw was discovered by ZwClose on GitHub who alerted HP to the existence of the bug.

The firm has issued a patch for 173 commercial and 293 consumer products and ZwClose says that a patch will be delivered via Windows Update as well.

We urge our readers to head to the HP support website to see whether their notebook is affected by this bug and if it is download the accompanying security patch.

As we mentioned earlier the keylogger aspect of the bug is disabled by default and requires a registry value to be set to activate it.

So while you aren’t in any immediate danger the bug could be used by malicious individuals. Your best bet is to simply download the patch as soon as possible.
