J.J. Abrams may be developing a Star Trek film with Quentin Tarantino. Wait. What?

Quentin Tarantino is one of Hollywood’s last true auteurs, and not just because he writes and directs all his movies.

The former Tinsel Town enfant terrible is now part of the establishment, yet his movies still hit a nerve thanks to snappy dialogue, jolting violence and colourful characters. He’s the last person anyone would expect to helm a franchise movie, but that just may be what’ll be happening in the not-too-distant future.

According to a sources who have spoken to Deadline, Quentin Tarantino may be about to collaborate with J.J. Abrams on the next Star Trek film. Yes, really. The report on the site says that Tarantino has shared a pitch for a Star Trek film with Abrams, who apparently was so impressed, he’s decided to convene a writer’s room in order to develop the project. If it gets the green light, Tarantino will direct and Abrams will produce.

This naturally throws up a couple of questions. First, what the hell will a Tarantino-helmed Star Trek movie look like? While we’re tempted to tick off the usual boxes – expletive-laden dialogue that addresses as much pop culture as it does plot points, eye-popping violence – Tarantino’s usual calling cards would probably be out of place in a Star Trek film.

Second, Tarantino has said on numerous occasions that he plans to retire from directing films after his next two pictures. Since his next film is with Sony Pictures, and is rumoured to be set in Los Angeles around the same time that the Manson murders took place in 1969, Paramount – the studio that presides over the Star Trek franchise – has just one shot to get Tarantino on board.

That all having been said, nothing may come from this project. Still, we can live in hope…
