Notebooks that behave like smartphones are here

Qualcomm made a number of announcements at its annual Snapdragon Technology Summit, which kicked off yesterday.

While the firm did tease its new Snapdragon 845 platform, there was another slice of news that excites us.

Qualcomm, HP and ASUS announced a number of “always connected PCs” that run Windows 10 on a Snapdragon platform.

First – what is an always connected PC?

Notebooks aren’t traditionally always connected to the internet. Sure you might automatically connect to the WiFi network at home but when you’re out and about that may not be the case.

This new slew of notebooks would not only be always connected to the internet via an LTE connection, but would boast longer battery life. Another feature of these notebooks could be the ability to close the lid and continue working without having to save documents. Think of it like a big smartphone with a lid and full keyboard running Windows.

“Today marks the beginning of a new era of personal computing and ASUS is proud to be paving the way with Qualcomm Technologies and other companies to develop this new landscape for ‘Always Connected’ Windows on Snapdragon PCs,” said ASUS chief executive officer Jerry Shen.

ASUS showed off the 2-in-1 NovaGo which boasts a gigabit LTE connection and 22 hours of battery life. HP revealed its convertible – the ENVY x2 – which is said to be incredibly thin, durable and built to be always online.

These notebooks aren’t for everybody but for folks like us here at htxt.africa the prospect of a notebook that is always online and that will last longer than four hours at a time is great.

We have contacted the local arms of both ASUS and HP to find out more about these notebooks including whether we can expect them in South Africa.
