YouTube is reportedly launching a music streaming service

With over one billion users visiting the website everyday YouTube is a massive platform and it hopes to get just a bit bigger with a new service.

That service – according to Bloomberg – is a music streaming service.

At first glance that seems a bit odd given that YouTube’s parent company Alphabet already has a music streaming service in the form of Google Play Music.

The problem is that record labels are not fans of YouTube given that much of the music they own is on the platform and yields very minimal returns. A move to break-off a slice of the site just for music might change that but we’re not sure that move would sit well with fans.

There’s also the question of how this would work.

According to Bloomberg Warner Music Group has already signed on to the new service – which is called Remix internally – while YouTube is still working to get signatures from Sony Music Entertainment and Universal Music Group.

As for music fans the new service is expected to go live in March but that is very much a rumour and considering the amount of work that needs to be done that deadline might be missed.

There’s also the matter of who will be able to access this service. To date many countries outside of the US don’t have access to YouTube Red where creators are paid to create original YouTube content such as Rhett and Link’s Buddy System.

If this were to be a similar service to YouTube Red

It’s clear that Alphabet wants to compete with the likes of Apple Music and Spotify but it needs to be done well and offer something more than those services do.
