The new Hearthstone World Champion is…

The Hearthstone Year of the Mammoth competitive season concluded at the weekend with the finals of the Hearthstone Championship Tour.

A total of 16 players from around the world gathered in Amsterdam to sling cards at each other.

In the end only one player could win and it could not have been a better match.

The finals saw crowd favourite Frank “Fr0zen” Zhang from the US facing off against Taiwan’s Chen “tom60229” Wei-Lin in a best of five match.

Zhang appeared to be in control of the match snatching two quick wins with his Mage and Priest decks.

With Zhang needing just one more win to secure the title he loaded his final deck – Jade Druid – to face Wei-Lin’s Highlander Priest deck.

What followed was a comeback of epic proportions with Zhang eventually conceding thanks to Wei-Lin’s draw engine and of course the Shadowreaper Anduin and Raza the Chained combo.

The final match was something of an iconic one with both players loading perhaps the most widely criticised of the year – Jade Druid.

Eventually the size of Wei-Lin’s Jade Golem’s grew to a point where Zhang could no longer answer the threats on board and he conceded.

Despite having a crowd cheering his opponent on Wei-Lin absolutely deserved the crown of World Champion. He is one of Taiwan’s top players and describes himself as a master of card games.

We now wait in anticipation for the Standard card rotation later this year which will see cards from Whispers of the Old Gods, One Night in Karazhan and Mean Streets of Gadgetzan retired to Wild. There’s also the matter of the Hall of Fame and whether Blizzard will retire cards from the Classic and Basic sets from Standard play as it did last year.
